EU Backs Armenia Amid Alleged Russian Pressure Ahead of Elections

(MENAFN) The European Union on Monday reiterated its commitment to supporting Armenia, expressing concern over what it described as Russian efforts to influence the country’s political and economic environment in the lead-up to parliamentary elections.

According to reports, an EU spokesperson said the bloc is continuing to work with Armenia to strengthen democratic governance, institutional resilience and the country's ability to respond to external challenges.

"We are supporting Armenia's democratic resilience, including against hybrid threats, foreign information manipulation, and interference, and attempts to undermine trust in democratic institutions," he said.

Speaking during a press briefing, the spokesperson argued that recent developments are part of a broader attempt by Moscow to affect Armenia’s internal affairs and political trajectory.

"Let's also be clear, the timing is no coincidence. Russia aims to hurt Armenia's economy and influence the outcome of the parliamentary elections in Armenia," he said ahead of Sunday's vote.

According to reports, the EU official stressed that the bloc will continue assisting Armenia in dealing with what it views as coercive measures and external pressure.

"We will continue supporting Armenia to handle such attempts of coercion," he added.

The spokesperson also emphasized that relations between Armenia and the European Union remain close and continue to deepen, describing the bloc as a dependable partner for the country.

According to reports, EU officials maintain that cooperation with Armenia has reached unprecedented levels, reflecting growing engagement across political, economic and institutional areas.

The spokesperson said the EU remains a "reliable and trusted partner" for Armenia and emphasized that ties between the two sides are "stronger than ever."
