UN Hails Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Announcement

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Tuesday expressed support for recent ceasefire announcements made by both Ukraine and Russia, calling for their effective implementation and a broader path toward lasting peace, according to reports.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement that the organization “welcomes the unilateral ceasefire announced by Ukraine, to begin on the night of 5 to 6 May, as well as the one by the Russian Federation, to take place over 8 and 9 May.”

He added that the UN Secretary-General hopes the ceasefires will be successfully observed and reiterated a call for a comprehensive and permanent cessation of hostilities. The statement emphasized support for “a full, immediate, unconditional and lasting ceasefire, leading to a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace, in line with the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions.”

The comments follow a Russian Defense Ministry announcement declaring a ceasefire for May 8–9, which it said was intended to mark the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II. The ministry also stated it would take “all necessary” measures to ensure security during commemorations and warned of a “massive” retaliatory missile strike if the events were disrupted.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a separate ceasefire beginning at midnight in Kyiv, stating that “Human life is far more valuable than any anniversary celebration.”

He also said Ukraine had not received any official request regarding the temporary halt in hostilities tied to Russia’s Victory Day commemorations, according to reports.
