Zelenskyy Pushes Back Against Russia's Nuclear Accusations

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy flatly rejected Russia's allegations Wednesday that Ukraine is pursuing nuclear weapons, denouncing the claims as a calculated pressure campaign designed to destabilize upcoming US-mediated peace negotiations.

Standing alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store at a Kyiv news conference, Zelenskyy accused Moscow of deploying the explosive accusations as a psychological lever ahead of the next round of talks.

"When Russia fails to achieve success on the battlefield, it starts looking for 'nuclear weapons' in Ukraine, although they are not there," he said.

Zelenskyy labeled such inflammatory rhetoric as "extremely dangerous," calling on the international community — and nuclear-armed states in particular — to push back forcefully against Moscow's narrative.

"First of all, the United States, it seems to me, could give Russia an appropriate signal," Zelenskyy noted.

The remarks came one day after Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service issued an incendiary claim that Britain and France are actively conspiring to furnish Kyiv with a nuclear bomb — asserting that both nations believe nuclear capability would hand Ukraine stronger leverage in any ceasefire settlement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov doubled down on the allegations Wednesday, telling Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin in remarks published the same day: "Let's hope that the timely publication of this intelligence will ultimately prevent the implementation of these crazy, completely insane plans."

In a separate Telegram post, Zelenskyy pivoted to commend Norway's sustained defense commitment, singling out Oslo's role as one of the most consistent contributors to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program — a procurement initiative enabling Kyiv to purchase American weaponry, chiefly air defense missiles.

"We greatly appreciate every military package provided by the Norwegians. Specifically, the long-term nature and predictability of Norway's support, your annual financial support packages, are very helpful for planning our defense and all our actions," he said.
