Third Phase of US-Brokered Russia, Ukraine Talks Wraps Up in Geneva
The negotiations were led by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. They take place just a week before the fourth anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, amid ongoing military attacks.
The Russian delegation was headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, replacing senior military officials who led prior rounds in Abu Dhabi. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the talks would cover a “wider range of issues,” including the central territorial disputes that Moscow has prioritized.
Ukraine’s team was led by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. Umerov stated that discussions focused on security and humanitarian issues, with working groups addressing political and military tracks. He added that the delegations are clarifying the parameters and mechanisms of previously discussed decisions.
Ahead of the Geneva meeting, Umerov held a separate session with US and European representatives, including officials from France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, to coordinate approaches for the next steps. Tuesday’s talks lasted over four hours, highlighting the complex and ongoing nature of the negotiations.
